What makes a great desk setup?

Three things matter most — everything else is optional.

Screen at eye level

The top of your monitor should sit at or just below eye level. This eliminates the forward head tilt that causes neck and shoulder pain. A monitor arm ($30–$55) achieves this perfectly.

Keyboard at elbow height

Forearms parallel to the floor, wrists flat. If your desk is too high, a keyboard tray fixes it. If it's too low, raise your chair and use a footrest.

Clear desk surface

Visual clutter creates mental friction. An under-desk cable tray, desk pad, and single-cable USB dock eliminates most surface mess in under an hour.

Monitor placement and ergonomics

Where your monitor sits is more important than what monitor you buy. These four rules apply to any display.

Height

Top of screen at or just below eye level. Most people need to raise their monitor 4–8" above desk height.

Distance

Arm's length — 50–70cm. Closer causes eye strain, further causes you to lean forward.

Tilt

Tilt back 10–20° so your gaze hits the upper third of the screen naturally.

Position

Directly in front of you — no twisting. If using two monitors, angle both slightly inward.

Cable management for a clean desk

A tidy desk is not about aesthetics — it is about reducing visual noise that creates subconscious mental friction all day. Do cable management before anything else.

Buy a USB-C dock — one cable connects everything and eliminates most desk clutter
Install an under-desk cable tray to route cables below the surface
Use velcro ties (not zip ties) to bundle cables — adjustable and reusable
Run monitor cable through a monitor arm's built-in cable channel
Use a cable spine or raceway on the desk leg if routing to the floor
Desk pad as last step — covers any remaining surface cables neatly

Desk setup by job type and style

The best desk setup depends on how you work. Choose your setup type for an exact gear list.

Ultrawide vs dual monitors for a desk setup

The two most popular multi-screen configurations — each with real trade-offs.

Ultrawide (34"+)

No bezel gap, cleaner cable run, less desk width. Better for immersive work and video editing. One display to calibrate.

Dual monitors

More total pixels per dollar. Flexible positioning. Can mix resolutions (4K primary + 1080p reference).

Desk setup FAQ

What makes a great desk setup?

Three things: screen at eye level, keyboard at elbow height, and a clear surface. Get these right before spending on accessories.

How big should my desk be?

Minimum 48" (120cm) for a single monitor setup. 60" (150cm)+ for dual monitors. Depth of 24–30" to position the monitor at arm's length.

What is the correct monitor position?

Top of screen at eye level, arm's length (50–70cm) away, tilted back 10–20°. A monitor arm achieves this far better than any stand.

Ultrawide or dual monitors?

Ultrawide for a cleaner, single-cable setup. Dual monitors for more total pixels per dollar and flexible screen positioning.

How do I manage cables in a desk setup?

Start with a USB-C dock, add an under-desk cable tray, use velcro ties to bundle, and run monitor cable through a monitor arm's cable channel.
